Distilled in 1973 in our distinctive Straight Neck stills, this incredible spirit has gone through an unparalleled journey for you to savour. It all started with a gentle maturation in refilled American Oak casks, allowing the liquid with enough time to develop a rich character over time.
Additional maturation in first fill Bourbon casks in 2011, followed by a re-cask in Oloroso Sherry hogsheads in 2017, further enhanced the complexity of this elegant single malt. The result is a light spirit with notes of white flesh fruits and crisp citrus, a tropical character often associated with older fruit-forward whiskies. Owing to its time in the Bourbon casks, the spirit has developed a rich, creamy vanilla flavour that beautifully complements the fruity aroma. The additional influence of the Oloroso cask is evident on the nose thanks to the spiciness of the nutmeg, developing into a warming cinnamon flavour that leaves a wonderfully long finish of woody spice.
A whisky this special demanded a presentation to match. In homage to our unique stills, a careful selection of copper finishings and touches have been woven into the design of the display cabinet and decanter. The natural oak finish nods to Master Blender, Michael Henry's careful selection of casks and the beauty of the surrounding forests of the Trossachs.
A 5cl miniature and hardback book also accompany each decanter. Finally, our most skilled partners have etched and applied the contours of Loch Lomond throughout the design, paying deepest respect to the hidden depths of our surroundings, our capabilities and our distillery’s history. The result is a masterpiece of conjoined craftsmanship that commands attention.
Master Blender, Michael Henry joined the Loch Lomond Distillery in 2007. Our oldest and rarest casks remain exclusively under his personal care, including this remarkable release.
"Our unique stills are synonymous with signature fruity notes. The 50 Year Old has been granted the time to truly concentrate that character, resulting in a rich, tropical fruit flavour. The decision to re-cask a whisky of this quality and age is not taken lightly, however the complexity and depth of flavour brought by the first fill Bourbon and the Oloroso sherry casks have made this a truly special single malt. The expectations are high when you are working with liquid as old and scarce, and it is a true honour to be the final custodian of such a special piece of history"
